This is one of those stories you see on the history channel when they are not doing a Hitler special. The Howard Hughes movie “Aviator” didn’t really touch at all on this part of his life. It is a compelling read about espionage at the deepest depths of the ocean. The retrieval of a Russian Nuclear sub. Enjoy the timewaster.
Other good reading:
Project Jennifer / Hughes Glomar Explorer
Scientific American Frontiers . Mysteries of the Deep

You can listen to the ocean under the Antarctic ice via this research station feed. It’s called: PALAOA the PerenniAL Acoustic Observatory in the Antarctic Ocean. Read more here.
It is usually just clicks and pops but I listened long enough to hear some ice collisions or what I thought were ice collisions and what sounds like storms occasionally. It also acts as a “white” noise generator. For other noise generators see my previous post on white noise machines.

There are services that will convert your digital camera to an Infrared camera. The cost varies from $100-$500 depending on your camera. If you don’t want to shell out that cash you can achieve similar effects using photoshop. Here are a few sites that have some good tutorials on the effect.

Our system of measuring days, months and years is completely insane. It was drawn up a dozen years before christ’s birth and is basically conjured up at the whim of Ceaser. It makes no sense. The month names are based on god’s and godesses and the days of the week are equally archaic. Check out this article on the origins of the months and days.
I really hope we switch to Metric time at some point. Star Trek has already brought “Stardate” to the lexicon. As humans, a species that is constantly evolving and pushing the limits of physics and science, we really cling to the deep past. I found this comparison of Metric vs. Decimal time interesting too.
